{"id":10711,"date":"2011-10-21T15:18:27","date_gmt":"2011-10-21T22:18:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/?p=10711"},"modified":"2019-03-10T13:12:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T20:12:22","slug":"where-is-your-portfolio-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/where-is-your-portfolio-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Where is Your Portfolio Site?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/speakers-copywriter.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"speakers-copywriter\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10717\" \/>Anyone who does business online without having a basic portfolio site is losing prospects left, right and center.<\/h3>\n<p>Personally, I am always on the lookout for qualified individuals to help me manage both my business and personal life &#8212; and when I find someone who appears to have potential, but does NOT have a portfolio (or business card) site or blog, I am NOT likely to make the time to ask them the necessary questions that might have resulted in employment.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, those folks approach me. <\/p>\n<p>For example, here is an email (highly modified) I received the other day:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hi Rosalind,<\/p>\n<p>My name is ____ and I have a background as a programmer, sales person and recruiter. <\/p>\n<p>I am interested in getting started in online lead generation and marketing content. I would like to talk about possibly partnering with me. I might be able to help you with ___, ___ and referring business your way. <\/p>\n<p>I need help with (a,b,c,d&#8230;.).<\/p>\n<p>If you are open to talking, please give me a shout back. <\/p>\n<p>Many thanks!<br \/>\n(name withheld)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The basic &#8220;<em>I know this and can help you with that&#8230;<\/em>&#8221; format was great, but he totally dropped the ball by not including a URL to his portfolio site that offered PROOF of his knowledge and expertise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unfortunately, I see examples of this mistake all the time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Photographers, web designers, copywriters, graphic artists, marketing professionals, programmers and so many more professionals who otherwise could be making more money online are losing business simply because they don't have a portfolio site to highlight their talents.<\/p>\n<p>Or worse, (in my humble opinion), they use a Blogger (Blogspot) blog that don't show their work in the best light &#8212; i.e. with poor color scheme and presentation choices (see below) .<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/lynn-photo-blog.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"lynn-photo-blog\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" style=\"float: center; padding: 10px 0px 10px 0px\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the homepage of the blog pictured above lacks so many important elements that it does absolutely nothing to enhance Lynn's credibility as a professional photographer.<\/p>\n<p>If you don't know what a portfolio site <em>should<\/em> look like, here is a short list of those that are based on <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/studiopress\">StudioPress themes<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/saccatalyst.com\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Capitol Mall Design Competition<\/a> (Minimum Theme)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.allisonott.com\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Allison Ott<\/a> &#8211; Customized Genesis<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joeedelman.com\/blog\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Edelman Photography<\/a> (Modified Lifestyle Theme)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/adamcochranefitness.co.uk\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Cochrane Fitness<\/a> (Modified Lifestyle Theme)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbbsnepa.com\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Big Brothers Big Sisters<\/a> Serenity Theme<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dfay.com\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Deirdre Fay<\/a> (Outreach Theme)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jaybaer.com\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jay Baer<\/a> (Modified StudioPress Theme)<\/li>\n<p>\t (Metric Theme)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even the StudioPress site offers a portfolio of its clients' sites!<\/p>\n<h4>Now let's look at a portfolio site in detail.<\/h4>\n<li>The Speaker's Copywriter belongs to my friend Sue Wright, who works full-time from her home in rural British Columbia as a copywriter. Her clients include Agora, Inc. and National Geographic! She generates business for her copy-writing services online VIA her website. Her website theme is the <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/studiopress\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">StudioPress<\/a> Metric Theme, as does my own &#8216;portfolio \/ personal' site at <a href=\"https:\/\/RosalindGardner.com\">RosalindGardner.com<\/a>.\n<p>Sue's portfolio site consists of all the necessary pages, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>About<\/strong> &#8211; describes Sue's experience and basic client offerings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Clients<\/strong> &#8211; lists clients for whom she's worked.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Testimonials<\/strong> &#8211; includes names and companies for whom they work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Samples<\/strong> &#8211; 2 PDF samples of the type of work she does.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Services<\/strong> &#8211; A list of all the various services she offers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contact<\/strong> &#8211; Sue provides 3 options for contact (telephone, email &#038; on-site form).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Moreover, Sue has an email opt-in form on her site which is incentivized with a downloadable report &#8211; &#8220;<em>5 Strategies to Expand Your Income: The Professional Speaker's Guide to Monetizing Speeches<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>The only changes I would recommend are that Sue upload a favicon, make her headlines more bold and add regular content to improve her Google search engine rankings and bring potential customers back to her site via <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/aweber-autoresponder-review\/\">blog to autoresponder  broadcasting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the improvements needed, this portfolio site has allowed Sue to recently quit her (awful) job and start working from home full-time.
