Between 2004 and 2010, I attended\/spoke at a number of\u00c2\u00a0conferences<\/a>, traveling from my home in semi-rural British Columbia to places such as L.A., Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., New York, Montreal, Miami and Dubai. As much as I love meeting my\u00c2\u00a0colleagues and students\u00c2\u00a0in person, I found the rigmarole of business travel exhausting.<\/p>\n

Contributing\u00c2\u00a0to the frazzle,\u00c2\u00a0is\u00c2\u00a0the fact that we spend\u00c2\u00a04 to\u00c2\u00a06 of the colder months traveling the southern United States in our RV.\u00c2\u00a0By the time we get home in April, I'm not keen to travel much beyond\u00c2\u00a0my backyard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, \u00c2\u00a0for those who are likewise\u00c2\u00a0disenchanted with business travel, virtual conferences are\u00c2\u00a0springing up everywhere.\u00c2\u00a0Indeed, Affiliate Summit <\/a>and\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Social Media Marketing World<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0are just two of the ‘real' conferences in the\u00c2\u00a0Internet, affiliate and blogging sphere that offer virtual conference ticket options.<\/p>\n

Here are 15\u00c2\u00a0advantages to\u00c2\u00a0attending a virtual conference.<\/p>\n

If you work for a company that picks up your travel and hotel\u00c2\u00a0expenses and<\/em> throws in a per-diem for food, the following section detailing conference costs doesn't really apply. But if you're a small business owner or a blogger just starting out in the business, the overall cost of going to a conference could be prohibitive.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Ticket Cost<\/strong> – An\u00c2\u00a0Affiliate Summit all-access pass costs $1879 and Social Media Marketing World's full ticket price is $1497. Virtual ticket prices are about 1\/4 the cost -\u00c2\u00a0 $249 and $397, respectively.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  2. Hotel Costs<\/strong> – Staying at the\u00c2\u00a0New York Marriott Marquis during Affiliate Summit is\u00c2\u00a0$289.00 per night, plus\u00c2\u00a08.875% New York State, 5.875 % New York City (14.75%) and\u00c2\u00a0$3.50 occupancy per room per night – a 3-night stay will run you north of $1100.00. BUT, you'll probably want to stay 4 nights, so lets call it $1500. \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  3. Airfare<\/strong> – Now\u00c2\u00a0add in the cost of\u00c2\u00a0flights. Judging from the options shown in the graphic below, I'd pick the most expensive flight because it takes half the time to get there! \ud83d\ude42\"flights\"Granted, flying from the west coast of the States is a lot less expensive than the west coast of Canada…\"us-fligths\"… but don't forget to add taxes, airport and baggage fees into your calculations!<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  4. Airport Transfers<\/strong> – According to Worldtaximeter<\/a> a taxi from LaGuardia Airport to the Marriott Marquis will cost $35.14 (times 2 if you plan to return home).\"taxi\"<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  5. Food and Beverage Costs<\/strong> – Did I ever tell you the story about my $23 sandwich<\/a> in Las Vegas or the $8.50 bottle of water<\/a> in Montreal? Unless you don't mind starving for a few days and can handle drinking\u00c2\u00a0tap water, factor in a couple hundred bucks for food and drink over the course of a 3-day conference.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  6. Clothing<\/strong> – ‘Fess up now, you will<\/em> buy something new to wear, won't you?<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  7. Sundries and Souvenirs<\/strong> – Forget to pack an important item? Absolutely must have those Empire State Building earrings? Add those to the bill!\n

    As you can see, attending a virtual conference can save you thousands of dollars in expenses. But there are other advantages to staying home for a virtual conference…<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  8. Time<\/strong> – The two days you would spend traveling to and from a conference are days you can work on your business, hang with your family, or both.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  9. No Customs and\/or Security Lines<\/strong> – Going virtual means you won't have to stand in line for goodness knows how long only to remove your coat, shoes and jewelry\u00c2\u00a0to\u00c2\u00a0stick 'em in a box to be scanned while you get stuck in another box to have yourself scanned. Oh, and those security personnel can be rough on equipment – they killed\u00c2\u00a0my Sony Vaio<\/a> on one trip.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  10. No Taxis<\/strong> – While I enjoy chatting with taxi drivers to find out where they're from and how they ended up where they are, I'm willing to forgo that pleasantry to avoid being grossed out by dirty cabs and fearing for my life while in transit.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  11. No Bedbugs<\/strong> – You might be shocked to learn at what fine hotels these nasty little critters have been reported. Check the Bed Bug Registry. Stay home – enjoy your own bed and pillow.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  12. \"sleep-deprived\"More Sleep<\/strong> – I've never been able to muster the discipline to get to sleep before 4 or 5AM when I'm at a conference. Now in my mid-50's, the side effects of sleep deprivation are clearly undesirable for the next day — or three. (Picture taken one morning at ASW09).<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  13. No Blisters<\/strong> – Conference halls are invariably half a mile from the hotel room towers and your room is sure to be at the end of the hall. Walking that stretch 4 to 6 times per day in heels is going to hurt.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  14. Stay Healthy<\/strong> – First, you cram yourself into a tube of stale, putrid air for hours. If that doesn't make you sick, then 3 days of handshakes, hugs, and brochure handling may just do the trick. Plan to write another week off work to hack and spew.<\/li>\n

     <\/p>\n

  15. Environmentally Friendly<\/strong> – By not traveling to New York from Penticton via Vancouver, the world is spared an additional 0.67 metric tons of CO2e. (Doesn't include carbon emissions from airport transfers). Furthermore, the local landfill and recycling center are not burdened by all those conference materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

     <\/p>\n

    OK, much of that was tongue-in-cheek and there are dozens of reasons why it's great to go to a real conference.<\/p>\n

    To prove it, I'm heading to San Francisco at the end of the month to go to Affiliate Management Days<\/a>. Sometimes, there's just no substitute for ‘being there'. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

    In the meantime, Social Media Marketing World's virtual ticket prices<\/a> increase from $397 to $697 on Friday, March 6th.<\/p>\n

    Get it now and avoid a nasty cold!<\/p>\n
