{"id":14926,"date":"2016-01-26T16:11:46","date_gmt":"2016-01-27T00:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/?p=14926"},"modified":"2022-11-20T12:09:23","modified_gmt":"2022-11-20T20:09:23","slug":"affiliate-marketing-mistake-2-choosing-the-wrong-niche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/affiliate-marketing-mistake-2-choosing-the-wrong-niche\/","title":{"rendered":"Affiliate Marketing Mistake #2: Choosing the Wrong Niche"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Choosing the wrong niche as an affiliate marketer means business failure right from the outset.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine for a moment the steps you would take to start a brick and mortar business.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding that opening a store is a time-consuming and costly venture, you would (at very least):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>have considerable interest in, and knowledge about, the niche in which you plan to sell;<\/li>\n<li>determine whether there is a market for the products you plan to sell;<\/li>\n<li>have, or source, sufficient funding to open a store and stock those products; and,<\/li>\n<li>do proper marketing to get the word out about your new business.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, it's not likely that you would choose to sell ski attire in Jamaica or open a farm feed store in downtown Manhattan. Those would clearly be the wrong niche.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, because many aspiring entrepreneurs are conned into believing that affiliate marketing is the way to &#8216;get rich quick' online, they fail to consider even the most basic business principles before venturing into the fray.<\/p>\n<p>I find that very sad because the most successful affiliate marketers and bloggers approach their online business start-ups EXACTLY as an entrepreneur starting a brick and mortar business.<\/p>\n<p>Take for example my former student\/now good friend, Lynn Terry.<\/p>\n<p>She learned basic business and affiliate marketing principles from my <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/sah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Super Affiliate Handbook<\/a> and then went on to launch her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelinglowcarb.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Traveling Low Carb<\/a> site, with which she has enjoyed HUGE success. She chose the right niche for her, not the wrong niche.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14933\" src=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traveling-low-carb.jpg\" alt=\"Traveling Low Carb with Lynn Terry\" width=\"800\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traveling-low-carb.jpg 800w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/traveling-low-carb-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Visit her site and you'll notice that she:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Practices what she preaches on a daily basis and has done so for years, i.e. considerable interest<\/li>\n<li>Posts regularly &#8211; every few days<\/li>\n<li>Took 2 niches (food and travel) and combined them<\/li>\n<li>Finely niched one of those topics (food to low carb)<\/li>\n<li>Has a very active presence on social media, i.e. 13K+ Facebook followers<\/li>\n<li>Is building a mailing list using <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/aweber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aweber<\/a> to re-connect with them on a regular basis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In other words, she lives, breathes (and eats) the topic she chose to blog about.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience of 18+ years of researching successful affiliate marketers (and being one), that's the only way to be successful in the long-term.<\/p>\n<p>You must OWN, believe in and be faithful to your topic.
