{"id":15963,"date":"2019-02-14T06:29:35","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T14:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/?p=15963"},"modified":"2019-02-20T14:42:56","modified_gmt":"2019-02-20T22:42:56","slug":"is-your-blog-gdpr-compliant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/is-your-blog-gdpr-compliant\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Your Blog GDPR Compliant?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16329\" src=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-compliant-blog.jpg\" alt=\"GDPR compliant blog\" width=\"975\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-compliant-blog.jpg 975w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-compliant-blog-300x154.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-compliant-blog-768x395.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>GDPR, which stands for General Data Protection Regulation, is a law covering data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) and also <em>the export of personal data outside the EU and EEA areas<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the GDPR regulation was implemented on May 25th, 2018, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve seen many blogs that are NOT GDPR compliant.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that bloggers outside the EU simply assume that they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to be GDPR compliant.<\/p>\n<p>Those bloggers would be wrong.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>GDPR compliance is required of <em>any blog<\/em> that has visitors from European Union countries.<\/h2>\n[adinserter block=&#8221;3&#8243;]It doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t matter whether or not your blog collects user data or if you sell products on your blog; <strong>if your site uses cookies (which it does)<\/strong>, you are liable for GDPR.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just some of the ways in which you may be collecting user data that you might not have considered.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visitors are allowed to subscribe to your WordPress blog.<\/li>\n<li>Site visitors are allowed to post comments on your WordPress blog.<\/li>\n<li>You collect names and email addresses through <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/aweber-autoresponder-review\/\">Aweber<\/a> or other autoresponder service.<\/li>\n<li>Your blog has a forum or bulletin board.<\/li>\n<li>Google Analytics has been installed to track traffic and audience behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Any type of social media embed, i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the very least, you should be building an email list and tracking visitors to your blog with Google Analytics!<\/p>\n<h2>What happens if your site in not GDPR compliant?<\/h2>\n<p>Violators of the GDPR may be fined up to \u00e2\u201a\u00ac20 million or up to 4% of their annual revenue, whichever is greater.<\/p>\n<p>OK, while it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unlikely that you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be fined \u00e2\u201a\u00ac20 million (about $22.66 million US) tomorrow, wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t it put your mind at ease to simply comply and avoid risking a fine?<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, if you comply with GDPR and that compliance to protect visitor data is obvious from the moment a visitor arrives on your website, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve established an element of trust right from the outset!<\/p>\n<h2>How to make your blog GDPR compliant<\/h2>\n<p>To be GDPR compliant, your blog must clearly disclose any data collection and the reasons for that data collection. It must also state how long the data will be retained and if it is shared with third parties outside the EEA.<\/p>\n<p>That might sound difficult to figure out and do, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actually very simple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need a Privacy Policy page<\/strong>. If you haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t already created one, WordPress can help you set one up. Just go to Settings &gt; Privacy in your WordPress Administration panel, and at the bottom of the page, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll see the following paragraph:<\/p>\n<p>Need help putting together your new Privacy Policy page?\u00c2\u00a0Check out our guide\u00c2\u00a0for recommendations on what content to include, along with policies suggested by your plugins and theme.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcCheck out our guide\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 will be linked to suggested text for your <a href=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/terms-of-use\/privacy-policy\/\">privacy policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll want to install and a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccookie consent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 plugin<\/strong>. That plugin makes it easy for your visitors to see and accept your blog\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tracking cookies and other terms of use. I installed the GDPR Cookie Consent plugin from my WordPress Administration panel.<\/p>\n<p>To customize the look and links, I went through all the tabs and links in the plugin, changing the message that would show up in the cookie bar, chose the colors I wanted and then linked to my Privacy Policy under \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Customize Buttons\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Read More Link\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16327\" src=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cookie-law-settings-1024x809.jpg\" alt=\"GDPR Cookie Law Plugin Settings\" width=\"840\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cookie-law-settings-1024x809.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cookie-law-settings-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/cookie-law-settings-768x607.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After doing that, all I did was check the site to make sure the plugin was working properly \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which it was!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16328\" src=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-cookie-bar-example.jpg\" alt=\"GDPR cookie bar example\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-cookie-bar-example.jpg 800w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-cookie-bar-example-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rosalindgardner.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/GDPR-cookie-bar-example-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE<\/strong>: Simply installing the plugin won't necessarily make your blog GDPR compliant but it's a good step in the right direction.
