Here is a question I received from Linda regarding my suggested use of email forwarding addresses.
Dear Rosalind… It has been my weekend project to read your book… wow – thank you! I am inspired to get started now.
I have one question please: How does registering an email address for each merchant control spam?
Many thanks.
Linda
Thanks, Linda! That's a good question!
So, here's how it works.
You join Merchants A, B and C's affiliate programs.
For each, you create a separate email address, eg. merchant-a@mydomain.com, merchant-b@mydomain.com and so forth.
Over time you receive standard affiliate information from Merchants A and C, but then you start to notice that a lot of spam is being sent to the merchant-b@mydomain.com.
In all likelihood Merchant B probably sold your address or are affiliate spammers themselves.
You can do one of two things.
- Terminate your association with their program, or;
- Change the email address to merchant-b-2@mydomain.com and see whether the situation improves.
My choice would be #1 above.
Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Ros!! Oh my gosh, it is good to hear from you again!! I had purchased your Affiliate Handbook SOME time ago, and had somehow lost touch with you for a LONG time, but was happy to find a reply from you in my inbox today, and yes, all is right with the world once more!Your site and advice is like a breath of fresh air,and I look forward to digging back into it again. Thanks again for everything you do.
Hi Ros.
Your suggestion to Linda maybe should have included one further step. That would be, to email the affiliate program manager first and advise of the SPAM being sent out and tell tham that a copy of that email has also been sent to the appropriate authorities.
By including the extra step above, you are not only looking after your own interests, you could be helping others out by bringing it to the affiliate manager’s attention and having it stopped.
If no action is taken by the affiliate program manager, THEN follow your #1 suggestion.
Kind regards,
Aussie John
