6 Amazon Alternatives for Affiliate Marketers

As an affiliate marketer who lives in Arkansas, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Rhode Island, or Vermont; you aren't eligible to join the Amazon Associates program.

Moreover, if you join the Amazon Associates program and then move to any of those states, you become ineligible to participate in the Program, and Amazon will terminate their operating agreement with you on the date you establish residency in that state.

So, what's an affiliate marketer who lives in AR, ME, MO, RI or VT to do?

Well, they should sign up for alternative merchants' affiliate programs which offer a wide variety of products and affiliate programs and which don't exclude people from their states from joining.

Here are 6 alternatives to the Amazon associates program…

  1. eBay

    Affiliates in the Ebay Partner Network earn double commissions for the first 3 months after they join.

    For example, let’s say you drive a visitor to eBay, who ends up with a winning bid on a laptop with a total sale amount of $500 and revenue of $40. If the Electronics category rate was set at 55%, your earnings would be $22, or 4.4% of the total sale amount.

    Overstock's affiliate program can be found at CJ by Conversant.

  3. Target

    You can earn 5 – 8% on apparel, accessories, home and outdoors goods, between 3 and 5% on baby gear and furniture and 1% on health and beauty products.

    They have a 7 day cookie and send a weekly newsletter with updates on promotions, contests, and sales opportunities.

    Target's affiliate program is run through the Impact Radius network.

  4. Walmart

    Walmart has 3 separate affiliate programs, one each for the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico. Commission rates vary as follows:

    • USA – 4 % commission {For all products not covered in specific SKU Lists}, 1 % commission [WM Electronics, Video Games, Movies, Music, Books, Photo ], 1 % commission [MP Electronics, Video Games, Movies, Music, Books, Photo
    • Canada – 1 – 2%
    • Mexico – 4 % commission {For all products not covered in specific SKU Lists},5 % commission[Audio, Electrodomesticos, Electronica, Fotografia], 7 % commission[Hogar, Patio Y Jardin, Muebles], 8 % commission[Bebes, Deportes, Juguetes, Mascotas], 10 % commission[Accesorios, Libros, Salud Y Belleza, Papeleria]

    Makes you want to learn to speak Spanish, right? 🙂

    Walmart's programs are available through the Rakuten Affiliate Network.

  5. Best Buy

    Best Buy claims to be the #1 retailer and most trafficked website for consumer electronics. Their commission rates vary between 0% of sale on Gift Cards, Warranties & Apple Tablets/Laptops/Desktops/iPhone Hardware/Watches, to 0.5% of sale on remaining laptops & tablets and 1% of sale on All Remaining Categories.

    You can also earn a $10 flat fee (bounty) on Geek Squad SKUs and a $5 flat fee for mobile plans.

    Best Buy's affiliate program is on the the Rakuten Affiliate Network.

See?

Amazon isn't the only game in town when it comes to having millions of users just primed to buy the stuff you want to promote!!

Step it Up: Sell Real Products on Amazon

It has always been my hope that my affiliate marketing students will take what they learn from me and eventually grow their online businesses to include selling their own products.

  1. First, you learn to sell other peoples' products,
  2. then you learn to sell your own, and finally;
  3. the BIG bonus — you get other people to sell YOUR products. 🙂

One of the best places to start selling real products online is through Amazon – something I've been doing for years with my Super Affiliate Handbook. My other book is marketed on Amazon through its publisher McGraw-Hill. Both products contribute nicely to my income.

Actually, I've been rather slack in not producing the Kindle version yet… but I'm sure that would be another nice income supplement. 🙂

And remember, Amazon isn't just about books – they market everything, almost everywhere.

Did you know that of Amazon's $60 Billion in annual revenue 41% of that (over $25 Billion each year) is produced by entrepreneurs selling products within Amazon's web site?

Perhaps, best of all for my affiliate marketing students, is that those who are ineligible to join the Amazon affiliate program are more than welcome to become Amazon entrepreneurs.

Two guys who are doing very well as Amazon entrepreneurs are Matt Clark & Jason Katzenback — who earn over $100,000 profit each and every month by selling real products on Amazon.

A few days ago they released a video in which they discuss the opportunity, show how they are doing on Amazon and just how scalable the business is. You can watch the video here. Their 2nd video answers the most-asked question about selling real products online… “What the heck will I sell?”.

They show you how to find golden opportunities on Amazon, what people are looking to buy with little competition, as well as how to find and deal with suppliers. They also manage to prove that the process is easier than you probably think it is.

Amazon Axes 10,000 California Affiliates

Shortly after California governor Jerry Brown signed the budget which includes the affiliate nexus tax, Amazon affiliates in that state received the following email from Amazon:

Hello,
For well over a decade, the Amazon Associates Program has worked with thousands of California residents. Unfortunately, a potential new law that may be signed by Governor Brown compels us to terminate this program for California-based participants. It specifically imposes the collection of taxes from consumers on sales by online retailers – including but not limited to those referred by California-based marketing affiliates like you – even if those retailers have no physical presence in the state.

We oppose this bill because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive. It is supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside California, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors. Similar legislation in other states has led to job and income losses, and little, if any, new tax revenue. We deeply regret that we must take this action.

As a result, we will terminate contracts with all California residents that are participants in the Amazon Associates Program as of the date (if any) that the California law becomes effective. We will send a follow-up notice to you confirming the termination date if the California law is enacted. In the event that the California law does not become effective before September 30, 2011, we withdraw this notice. As of the termination date, California residents will no longer receive advertising fees for sales referred to Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com. Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned on or before the termination date will be processed and paid in full in accordance with the regular payment schedule.

You are receiving this email because our records indicate that you are a resident of California. If you are not currently a resident of California, or if you are relocating to another state in the near future, you can manage the details of your Associates account here. And if you relocate to another state in the near future please contact us for reinstatement into the Amazon Associates Program.

To avoid confusion, we would like to clarify that this development will only impact our ability to offer the Associates Program to California residents and will not affect their ability to purchase from Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com.

Share Your Amazon Favorites on Twitter

On November 4th, Amazon announced the launch of a new feature called Share on Twitter that can be accessed through their Site Stripe.

To use it, login to your Amazon Associates account, visit the page that you want to share, click on “Share on Twitter” within the Site Stripe and that will open up a new window in your Twitter account, pre-populated with the product details.

The tweet is prefaced with “Great Deal on Amazon:”, followed by the title and a shortened URL, coded with your affiliate link. I suggest that you change the prefix to something more personal and specific, i.e. “What I'm reading now”, as shown in the sceenshot below.

Once you've altered the message, click on Update and your Tweet goes public, with the potential to earn referal fees.
