What's YOUR name?
Are you proud of it?
Then SHOW your pride and make sure that is part of everything you do online.
OK, taking a step back, I agree that there are many instances in which you would want to use a pseudonym to work online — and in that case, be proud of your pseudonym and make sure you rank for that!
In either case, make sure you RANK for whatever name you choose and make sure that the rankings MATTER.
For example, here are the sites and social media accounts for which you SHOULD rank on Google IF you are marketing yourself correctly:
- Your main blog
- YouTube
Those are BASIC accounts. Sign up for them, if you haven't already.
Below is an example of how I show up in a search for Rosalind Gardner (without quotes) on Google.
The only way you can get there is by using your name on your blog and anywhere you post comments as well as joining and posting to social media accounts under your name.
Be proud of it – whether it's your real name, a pseudonym or a company name – USE it!
BTW, if you haven't already done so, register your REAL NAME or Company Name at Bluehost today!

Cheers,
Where do I start….afraid, don’t know where to start, don’t have a clue where or how to put up a blog much less a web site. Have no extra money for help from those that do know, and the list goes on. Lots and lots of help needed.
Hi Rosalind,
Thanks for the advice. I just started with internet marketing last year and have learned a lot. I am definitely trying to brand myself, but the internet is competitive. I appreciate the words of encouragement.
Keep an eye on my name. You might be seeing a lot more of it in the near future.
Thanks again.
Hi Rosalind!
Thank you for the thought provoking blog post!
I’ve got to do a better job of this in 2013 — right now I’m nowhere to be found on the first page of Google when I type in my name. I used to have more of a presence circa 2008 and 2009, but not so much anymore.
Here’s an idea for a future blog post… how does one configure WordPress to show a small photo of oneself that then appears in Google’s search results besides one’s blog? I’ve started noticing this more and more and it’s a really cool feature!
Thank you again for the timely and thought provoking blog post!
Kind regards,
Ethan
Hi Ethan,
Recognition is the first step, so congratulations!
As for showing your thumbnail… you must use the same email addy that you use for your Google account for that to show up in most of your other accounts.
Cheers,
Ros
Rosalind, Do you do most of your WordPress website yourself. I’m just asking. Wondering if I need to find the time to learn and do all of mine myself as well. It gets so time-consuming. But I can’t really afford to hire someone.
Have you ever looked at SiteBuildIt! They seem like a pretty good way too.
Thanks!!
Will be Using My Name From Now On…
Thanks Rosalind!
Good to hear, Daniel!
I could not agree more Ros. Having done this for 15+ years I have always used my name in everything I do. That includes blog posts, forum posts and all other form of posting. Although, Google+ is kinda pissing me off with the way they are skewing the Google results with what you put in G+. But I guess it is their bat and ball so you have to play their game.
Hey Jim,
Good to hear from you and thanks for letting us know about the G+ issue. I’ll have to look more into that.
Cheers,
Ros
Even if my name is Wattie Schmendrake ?
Peter,
That would be an easy name to rank for, so sure! 🙂
Cheers,
Ros
