First Casino Affiliate Convention in Asia

With gaming predicted to one of the largest growth markets in Asia during the next decade, Ticonderoga Ventures, Inc. is holding its 1st annual Asian gaming conference for affiliates in Macau, China on November 28-29, 2007.

Respected affiliate marketing industry leaders to speak at the inaugral Asian Casino Affiliate Convention event include:

  • Mor Weizer, CEO of Playtech
  • Jason Chan, President of Entertasia
  • Monte Cahn, CEO of Moniker
  • Chen Yu, Vice President at YeePay

Attendance for the Macau event is limited with online registration ending on November 22nd, 2007.

Christmas 2007: Holiday Shopping Forecast

The (Canadian Thanksgiving) turkey has barely been digested and the Halloween candy hasn't yet been shelled out, but it's beginning to look a LOT like Christmas online.

According to Advertising.com's second annual Holiday Shopping Study conducted to analyze consumer shopping behavior and expectations for the 2007 holiday season, results indicated that 2007 will be strong for online shopping, with 84 percent of respondents planning to spend as much as or more online than they did during the 2006 holiday season.

Also according to the survey, consumers plan to start their holiday shopping earlier this year than in 2006.

Fifty percent of survey respondents indicated that they plan to start shopping for holiday gifts in October or earlier. In 2006, 44% said they would start shopping after Thanksgiving, and 15% said they would wait until the last two weeks of December. (Perhaps the latter 15% wised up when they missed retailers' cut-off dates and their gifts didn't arrive in time for Christmas last year?)

Although they may start comparing products and searching for gift ideas earlier, the study indicated that most consumers will wait until November or December to make their purchases.

Advertising.com's research supports this, with data showing that conversion rates increase from about 10% in the third week in November to almost 20% one month later. At 20%, December 15 was the highest conversion day during the 2006 season.

When asked “What are your top three reasons for going online during the holiday season?”, 54% of participants responded that deals and discounts were their primary reason, closely followed by ‘save time/convenience' and ‘compare product prices' at 51% and 50% respectively.

When asked what types of online holiday offers/promotions survey participants found most enticing, free shipping led the pack followed by sales, coupons, rebates and special gift packages.

Google Slap or Salvation?

I just finished writing my latest column for Revenue magazine. In the article I mention “when Google finally gets serious about producing relevant search results and dumps the no-content Adsense and YPN arbitragers outright, advertising costs for real affiliates (and merchants) should decrease substantially“.

Well, if you've been staying abreast Google's landing page quality guidelines – which some refer to as a ‘Google Slap' – you're aware that according to a September 18th Inside Adwords post, another set of changes was made one week ago that promises to penalize arbitrage sites ‘that are designed for the sole purpose of showing ads'.

QnA: Can Affiliates Promote Skill Games in the U.S.?

Bob asked the question, “Does this mean that affiliates can promote soft games in the US and not come into conflict with the law?” following my ‘Gaming Affiliates Set Sights on New Opportunites in Lucrative Niche Markets‘ blog post.

Although I'd love to provide a definitive answer (in the affirmative) for you, skill games promotion seems to be a big “gray area” in U.S. law, with some games deemed acceptable while others that one might assume qualify as skill games are not eligible for promotion.

And before I delve into confusing you further, here's my caveat; a) I do not work in the gaming sphere, b) I live in Canada and c) I am not a lawyer.

Jack: My Biggest and Littlest Fan :-)

This is SO sweet.

My Google Alerts led me to Shawn Collin's (co-founder of Affiliate Summit) Affiliate Tip blog entry titled “Rosalind Gardner's Biggest Fan” where I found this picture of his son Jack, perusing the Super Affiliate Handbook.

Shawn makes the comment “… it never fails. He passes by Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell, Jay Conrad Levinson, Frank Luntz, Robert Cialdini, John Caples and all the rest. Always straight to Ros.”

Well Shawn, I'm honored to know that you have my book on your shelf and delighted to see that you're teaching your kids right and giving them a great leg up in the affiliate marketing world.

Too, Jack may be my biggest fan, but he's also my cutest fan! 🙂

Why it PAYS to Read those Program Emails

I'm sometimes pretty slack about reading emails that come in from my merchant partners. “Not another new product notice… aargh“, is what I typically think when I see them in the Inbox.

But those emails aren't always product promotions. Sometimes they look like this:

“Unfortunately, we have run out of budget for ______ this quarter and will need to pause all promotions by the end of the day. Please have your links down by midnight tonight. This will not be a permanent stop; however, we don’t anticipate receiving more budget until next quarter in October. I will let you know if there are any changes to this campaign and if we may begin promoting sooner. I apologize for the short notice and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Well, at least I got the “aargh” part of the equation right. 🙂

Do, therefore, make it a point to actually read those affiliate program notices on a regular basis! Not doing so may affect your bottom line, and not in a beneficial way.
