Are You Playing Nice with Blog Spammers?

comment-spamA few months ago, I helped a friend set up his first blog – sending him to Bluehost to arrange for his domain name (for free) and hosting – after which I did the installation with very basic plugins and told him to start writing, which is what he did.

I had access to the WordPress adminstration panel under my own name and set things up so that I would be notified of updates and blog comments.

Then I went offline for awhile.

Upon getting back to work, I noticed that he had made several posts to his blog and had already approved and responded to numerous comments.

Examples of those comments include:

I totally understand how someone who is new to blogging doesn't ‘see' beyond a spammer's charm.

But here is the reality.

LESSON: You need to look at the names, URLs and email addresses of those who post comments to your blog to decide whether they are real people / commenters before you respond to them.

Look for names that appear real, i.e. Mark Smith as opposed to a product name such as ‘nike air max 90'.

If the domain URL coincides with the name, i.e. parka chilliwack canada goose / parka-chilliwack-canada-goose.wintp.com, trust that this is a spammer.

Do NOT approve or respond to their posts.

All they want is a link to their site from your blog, with the hope of increasing their blog's ranking with Google.

However, allowing those links will eventually hurt your Google rankings because you are linking to ‘bad neighborhoods', i.e. spammers.

Do NOT play nice with spammers.

Mark their comments as spam and teach Akismet how to filter comments on your blog.

7 Ways to Speed Up Your Blog

This morning I visited, or rather, tried to visit a blog that loaded so slowly, I was transported back to 1996, when we used 28.8K dial-up modems and almost every site took forever to load in a browser.

Actually, I was so frustrated by the long loads back then, that I remember declaring that the Internet was ‘too big a waste of my time’, pushing the chair back from my roommate’s computer and staying away from it for many months thereafter.

Yes, it’s true! 🙂

But when my roommate took his computer to his new posting, curiosity got the better of me.

With a used IBM laptop, I discovered that the Internet had evolved rather quickly during those months and I was soon hooked on all the Internet had to offer… especially from sites where I could get information FAST!

Nowadays, there is absolutely NO excuse for having a site that loads slowly, especially if you want to make money online.

One of Google’s basic ranking factors is site speed.

According to SearchMetrics.com’s SEO Ranking Factors -Rank Correlation 2013 for Google USA article, “On-page factors (such as site speed) are considered more of a prerequisite for ranking higher in search.” So, even if your site ranks well in a other categories (quality content, social signals, backlinks, etc.), a slow load will detract from your overall ranking.

So, to make Google happy and avoid losing potential customers – implement the following tips to speed up your site.

  1. Resize Graphics and Photos

    Large graphics and photos take a long time to load, and it doesn’t take many images within a blog post to slow down your website..

    If you run banner ads in your sidebar or include photos in your posts, it is worth your time to make those images smaller.

    Use your favorite image editing program (I use an old version of Paint Shop Pro) to change the colors used from 16 million to 256, or the resolution from 300 dpi to 72 dpi.

    For example, I'm currently running an ad for FB Influence in the sidebar of this blog. The merchant's original image is 300 x 250 pixels and 219.7 kilobytes in size.

    The final image has a file size of only 74.2 kilobytes.

    When you compare the two, you can see a TINY loss of quality… but not enough that your visitors are ever likely to notice or think your site is cheesy by result.

    If you don’t have Paint Shop PRO or Adobe Photoshop, you can use a free graphics editor such as GIMP to resize and save your images.

  2. Take out the Trash

    wp-optimizeSimply deleting unwanted comments and spam comments does not get rid of them forever. Rather than mucking about in your WordPress database using phpMyAdmin, you can remove post revisions, comments in the spam queue, and all those unapproved comments using WP-Optimize plugin. Here's what the plugin found on RosalindGardner.com.

  3. Delete Unused Plugins

    So, OK… apparently I don't always practice what I teach.I found 15 unused plugins on my personal blog as I was doing research for this article.

    Bad me… but they are gone now.

    Seriously, I installed Flickr Photo Album and Flickr RSS on my blog many moons ago, used them for a little while and didn't delete them when I stopped using them.

    Unused plugins are a drain on the system, even when you are NOT using them.

  4. Avoid Broken Links

    Broken links are bad! They bog your blog loads, cheese off your readers, and negatively impact your Google ranking, so just get rid of them!

    I use the Broken Link Checker plugin

    Word of warning – activate the Broken Link Checker plugin only when you want to check your links and then deactivate as soon as you are finished.

  5. Get a Great Hosting Service

    If you have one blog, having your hosting service on a shared server such as BlueHost will most likely suit your needs splendidly.

    However, if you run numerous blogs, plan to start a membership site or any other type of site that you know (hope) will consume copious bandwidth, you really should get set up on a VPS – virtual private server.

    I have been absolutely thrilled with my hosting service since moving to them earlier in the year. After they handled the complete transition of numerous sites with a vast cornucopia of plugins and other software, I noticed an increase in site speed and an increase in site speed immediately.

    My sites are hosted now with WebSiteManagers.net – thank goodness! 🙂

  6. Use a Cache Plugin

    A cache plugin generates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your webserver serves that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier WordPress PHP scripts.I use W3 Total Cache.

  7. Use a CDN

    Have you ever come across a SUPER-speedy blog that you know is really busy?

    They probably use a CDN.

    CDN is the acronym for ‘Content Delivery Network' which typically uses multiple data centers to serve content with high performance… in a word… ‘fast'. Cloudlare and Stackpath (formerly MAX CDN) are two popular content delivery networks.

I've made a LOT of changes to speed up this website (and my other blogs) in the last few months and they are definitely working.

Faster than 83% of websites tested works for me… especially since I tested some really famous bloggers' sites and they come in at the 60% range.

Ya… can you hear me saying ‘na na na NA na'. LOL!

Making it Big: How Blogging Gets Better When You Think Big

turnkeyI’ll say it upfront: blogging isn’t exactly the best way to make money. There are some bloggers who did make it big but those are an exception. Most bloggers find it extremely hard to pull in revenue through their blogs. John Bardos makes an honest confession on JetSetCitizen, and we can feel it.

John said it out aloud that blogging is a lousy way to make money; most bloggers won’t tell you. There’s a sense of shame, self-aggrandizement, and fear of ridicule associated with failure. As long as we are human, coming out in the open about failure isn’t exactly natural.

Yet, blogging is not a lost cause. The cause is not lost as long as you realign your intent, passion, determination, and entrepreneurial ambitions. Here’s how you can still make it big with blogging:

Forget “Blogging,” Think “Publishing”

 Blogging is self-publishing. It’s the “self” that hurts the publishing part though. Individual bloggers have seen notable success. Take a look at what Gary Vaynerchuk (wine magnate cum social media evangelist), Ann Smarty (prolific blogger and founder of MyBlogGuest), or our very own super-marketer Ros Gardner have done, and that’s proof enough. Most people forget the years of sacrifice put in by these amazing bloggers, not to mention the fact that they started early, and then make the mistake of doing exactly what they’ve already done in more or less same niches.

When you start retailing online, you don’t compete with Amazon and eBay. In the same way, don’t bother trying to beat already established blogs. Take the publishing route and take on niches that haven’t been covered as much. Avoid personal finance, travel, health, making money online, and “blogging” as your niches to begin with.

Don’t Go It Alone

 Blogging is a way for individuals to start publishing for themselves. It is also a great way for companies to publish. Companies either hire in-house personnel or freelance copywriters to blog; most individual bloggers don’t have this luxury.

If don’t involve others in contributing to your blog, the fun that blogging is ends right there. Blogging alone is like getting a fancy job that doesn’t even pay. Being passionate about a topic and writing about it for a lifetime is something else. If you have to make money from blogging, you absolutely have to get in the professionals. Find experts, interested and opinionated readers, freelance writers, influencers and others to write for you.

That’s the only way you can scale.

Let Users Generate Content, So You Don’t Have To

Typically, you write blog posts that others read. If your blog becomes popular, you see healthy discussions around your posts that are pleasantly (and sometimes profitably) interactive.

That’s not enough, though. You’d need a strong input from users to create user generated content that has value in itself, both for those who contribute and those that read and consume.

The rise of social media can be attributed to the power of user-generated content. Quora, Urbanspoon, Glassdoor, and many more sites are all examples of reviews, comments and visitor-blogging ideas that propelled themselves on the power of user-generated content.

Everyone likes to be where the action is. We all want to know what others think. Combining the power of collective inputs on little-known areas is insanely powerful. The most popular publications tap into and depend on it. Why shouldn’t you too?

Find Parallel Paths for Publishing

Once you start blogging like it’s a business, you expand your scope for publishing. What used to be text and images on your blog now finds a way to extend into videos, podcasts, webinars, seminars, physical events, training courses, guest blog posts, interviews, and books.

If you have to make it big with blogging, you’ve got to think big first. Seek opportunities to publish a book, offer free training (on whatever it is that you blog about) for your readers, create on-location events, create slide decks, present them and put them up on SlideShare for people to view them for all eternity, share your videos on YouTube/Vimeo, or start a forum.

Your blog, given today’s state of blogging, is too small to make an impact. You have no choice but to grow big.

Run It Like a Business

When you start a business, you think of hiring staff, creating systems, creating value, and selling value in exchange for money. For bloggers, value lies in “information.” Instead of operating a never-ending avalanche of information conveyor belt all by yourself, run your blog like a business.

Think of monetizing your blog, selling information in exchange for dollars, paid subscription for access to your blog, and producing pay for access content.

GigaOm did that. Can you?

Plan for Revenue, Long-term

Read posts on “blogging” and you’ll hear some people lament: “avoid advertising initially,” “don’t look to monetize,” and “give and then take” – all of that is true. You don’t have to display advertising but you can “plan” to monetize. Create long-term goals on how you intend to make money out of your blog.

Brent Weaver, a web designer who runs his own agency at Hotpressweb.com, first started BCGurus.com as a blog where he’d publish all things connected to Adobe Business Catalyst. Later, the blog turned into a veritable source of information (including videos, cheat sheets, and downloadable information) exclusively for other business catalyst members.

Today, BCGurus is a thriving community complete with the original blog, directory, and even a marketplace for BC templates.

Brent didn’t plan everything from the start, but he did have a vision. He wanted the fruit of his labor, and he now uses BCGurus as a business model by itself while creating tons of precious social proof for his own business.

The common thread is that all popular blogs are monetized. They are built to bring in revenue. None of that happened in a day, though.

Plugin and Broken Links Could Kill Your Affiliate Business

money-goneThose who have been following my Facebook page posts already have some inkling as to the content of this post. (That's a hint for those of you who haven't clicked that ‘Like' button yet. 🙂 )

Last Thursday, I logged into Commission Junction to get some links and then left the browser page open.

A few hours later, when I refreshed the Commission Junction interface, the resulting page notified me that my account had been deactivated.

Huh?

WHAT?

I tried to log in several more times, but returned to the same page each and every time.

So, I phoned Commission Junction.

As I'm not one of their Super Duper affiliates with a representative or special number to call, I got a ‘we're too busy to talk to you‘ recording, So, I left a message.

After doing that, I logged into their Support Desk and wrote another message, the reply to which was ‘we'll get back to you within 72 hours‘.

Being a Thursday, I didn't expect to hear anything back until Monday at the earliest.

No such luck.

I phoned again on Monday afternoon and an actual person got on the line. Quickly detailing my issue adding a few minor assertions to having been a publisher in their network for more than a decade, the CJ rep was cold as ice. She simply directed me to Network Quality, which corresponds ONLY via email.

Great.

So, I sent another email to the address she'd given me and received yet another automated response stating that they'd get back to me within 72 hours.

FABULOUS!

Thank goodness I was ONLY writing a book in which I planned to extol the virtues of the Commission Junction network!

Duh!

At that point, I called out to my friends on Facebook for help… which came immediately. One suggested a ‘big gun' tactic, which despite knowing my piddly ass CJ commissions did NOT warrant, I tried anyway.

The tactic worked and I was back online the next day.

So, what was the problem?

Well, their network quality people asserted that I was sending ‘forced clicks‘.

Say WHAT? and Who ME? I don't even KNOW how to generate ‘forced clicks'.

As it turned out, a plugin and a couple of bad links were responsible.

The plugin was the ‘Broken Links checker' an issue that I dealt with immediately back in January when CJ contacted me about the issue.

The Broken Link Checker was sending so many ’empty clicks’ to Commission Junction merchants that they sent me a warning letter to suspend its use. Now I use it sparingly and deactivate the plugin when not in use.

The bad links were the 2nd issue. They turned out to be a merchant's OLD links that I'd forgotten to change when then moved from their proprietary affiliate program to CJ. In the latter case, the merchant conveniently made sure that all their old links redirected to CJ, but somehow those links didn't work with CJ's network quality people. Not to mention that I wasn't getting PAID for sending that traffic.

Another issue was that I wasn't getting CJ's emails.

I received the notice about the plugin back in January which I dealt with and responded to immediately, but for some reason didn't receive (or notice) the 2nd ‘warning'.

Based on those two instances, I can only guess that my account was targeted as being a ‘bad affiliate‘.

So, with nothing more than a 2nd warning and no reply on my part, my account was deactivated.

My thoughts on the whole matter?

Basically, I understand why Commission Junction is so quick to get rid of bad affiliates. REALLY bad affiliates who scam the system place a major strain on the whole industry, so the CJ approach tends to be ‘guilty until proven innocent'.

If I hadn't gotten in touch with the powers that be (who were EVER so nice to me, despite my being a very average affiliate), no one in Network Quality would have bothered to source my best email address, my account would have been down the tubes with about $150 in commissions just for the last month.

In as much as that is chump change to me, I could have said “goodbye and good riddance” without another though, but I GET that $150 is represents SO much money to so many of you.

So, I persisted.

Instead of opening a new account as others suggested I do. I persisted. Besides, changing those links was going to be too big a hassle.

Too, instead of just giving up and joining the ‘I hate CJ' coaltion as suggested by others, I persisted.
Hey, even if you're making only $100 per month with them, that's $1200 per year… or a lot of beer.

So, the lesson is ‘be persistent'!!!

If you are upfront, honest and listen to their instructions – CJ will respond… eventually. Perhaps not as quickly as you would like, but waiting may be a better option than losing commissions and doing all the work to replace merchants and links.

Mobile or PC? What is the Most Secure Connection?

Remember ages ago (or what seemed like ages ago) when people fretted over the safety of buying items online? What about the security risk? Well, times have changed significantly in a short amount of time. Nowadays, it’s not merely that people accept online purchases…they are now trusting their mobile devices—portable systems—more than their PCs. Why is this?

In the Beginning There Was No Security

First consider why we know (or at least used to think) that PCs were safer than mobile devices or cell phones. PCs are what introduced us to the concept of online transactions. Because PCs were locally based, and hardwired, they were always perceived as safer means of communication than using a cell phone. (Much like a landline was considered safer than a cell phone) Even when WI-FI was introduced it was considered highly unsafe, because of potential breaches and hacking.

However, as technology improved and people became used to the concept of online transactions (made possible through brand name companies that stood by said transactions, like eBay, PayPal, Amazon and so on) eventually a shift occurred. We were introduced to secure systems and ultra-secure hardware, as in Linux (a Windows alternative so simple and protected, it was the government’s choice) as well as the Blackberry device, and the VPN (Virtual Private Network) option, which scrambled IP tracing and encrypted information.

Revolutionary Technology

And yes, when the iPhone and other notable mobile units first came out, there was a great deal of trepidation about relying on 3G or WI-FI to conduct business. iPhones and particularly unprotected WI-FI connections were said to be highly dangerous in comparison to hardwired PCs. Blackberry was singled out as the best choice in secure usage, followed by the Linux-derived Android system. The Blackberry in particular earned a great deal of ink for being “too secure,” thanks to modern encryption technology. In fact, a recent article at ZNet reported how the Indian government’s intelligence services can’t even break the Blackberry’s encryption in hopes of counteracting terrorists threats.

Another issue that bears consideration: more people are starting to trust their mobile phones and tablet PCs than their own desktop computers. Why? Sure, desktop PCs have the hardwiring and the tight encryption…but users are now so protective of their smartphones that they are avoiding taking risks downloading suspicious apps. A survey by Metaforic reported that 12% of users stated that the effort and security questions of downloading apps didn’t justify the convenience for online banking. However, 14% of the users said that using a PC system prevented them from accessing online banking.

More Changes Ahead

It’s easy to see the potential for abuse here; Google’s Android system is so open to third party developers that it is now considered one of the most insecure systems for popularity alone—despite a fairly secure system, better than old iPhones.

On the other hand, mobile banking allows users to securely access their accounts in confidence; they always know where their devices are, and hardly ever leave it unattended. The mobile banking sector, for instance, is now tied to an individual. There is no middle man. Furthermore, fast fraud notification and geo-location features are preventing fraud from taking place.

And just remember this. In the coming years, biometric based security will grow significantly. It’s not going to be for desktop computers—it’s going to be for mobile systems. We’re already getting devices like the Ice Cream Sandwich, which actually relies on a person’s face to unlock the phone. Siri for Apple already recognizes voices, and more is coming in speech to text technology.

Lastly, consider that Decisive Analytics compared the latest iPhone and iPad designs and actually declared them more secure than the Blackberry. Now how’s that for rapidly advancing technology?

Designing an E-Commerce Site to Maximise Sales

  • Description – Descriptions should be brief enough that they don't cause a reader to lose interest, but you can have fun with these. Be sure that your content matches the tone of your brand and remains consistent throughout the website.
  • Reviews – Allowing customers to post reviews on the website is a way to boost confidence in your products. Online shoppers are not only savvy but they also want to know what others think about their purchase.

  • Use a single page checkout system – The more pages you add to your checkout process, the higher the chance you have of losing your customer. Questions should be kept to a minimum, and it's best to avoid asking for registration details before they can pay you.

 

  • Offer an array of payment options – You can enable your website to accept numerous credit cards and other options such as Paypal, to encourage a wider range of customers to make a purchase.

 

  • Make return policies clear – New customers will look for this policy straight away before making a purchase, so make sure it's easy to find.

Customer Support

Your customers will feel more confident making purchases if they know that they can contact you should anything go wrong. Having an instant chat feature available during checkout is one way to boost confidence. You should also make your contact information clear on the homepage and use your blog and social media profiles to communicate with customers so that they feel there is a real person behind the website who can respond to their needs.

 

Why Every Local Business Needs a Website

Scott, the arborist, and his crew from Element Tree Services in Penticton had just finished doing a magnificent job of cutting, shaping and pruning the trees in my yard.

As I was writing a cheque for his work, I asked, “What's your website address?”

“I don't have one yet”, was Scott's reply.

“Are you KIDDING me?”, I asked.

“You guys do AWESOME work at very reasonable rates, PLUS you are new to the area, AND you DON'T have a website? Are ya NUTS?”, I spouted in my typical no-holds-barred fashion.

“Haven't got to that yet”, Scott replied.

“OK, well, there's plenty of competition in the area and if you don't have a website that highlights your expertise and services, you're losing business” says I, always the online marketer.

I COULD go on…. and on and on and on and on some more.

But seriously folks, if you have a business and want MORE business… you really need to have your own website.

What Scott has missed by not having a website was my testimonial for the fabulous work he did for me… and trust me, I've worked with enough landscapers and arborists in Penticton to know the difference between OK, good and terrific.

I would have extolled his virtues as a true professional to the world and his site would have been seen that much more readily in the local search results.

Too, because I'm on Yelp, Facebook AND Twitter and not shy to proclaim the positive — I'd have posted my exuberance at finally having found a GREAT arborist in my hometown of Penticton, British Columbia.

As it stands, other than for this post, I haven't been able to share my glee at having worked with such a knowledgeable and professional tree service specialist / arborist in Penticton.

With luck, his company, Element Tree Services, will benefit from this post.

However, don't count on all your customers sharing good news on Facebook, Yelp or on their blogs.

Bottom line? Get a website, especially if you have a local business and want MORE business.

It's NOT that hard and I can help… check out my blogging Academy if you want to save some money by doing it yourself (it's NOT that difficult) and have a BEAUTIFUL website, to boot.

Otherwise, the least you can do is register a domain name and get a quick website up with GoDaddy or Bluehost (the latter of which includes domain registration in their hosting fees.

Either way, it's such cheap marketing for your local business that you're crazy if you DON'T do it today.
